Fellow Dire Dawans and friends of Dire Dawa Dire Dawa is busy now preparing itself to celebrate the 105th anniversary of its establishment on January 5, 2008.

We, the people ofDire Dawa and its administration, would like to extend our invitations not only to all our fellow Dire dawans currently residing abroad, and elsewhere in Ethiopia but also to all those who consider themselves as friends of Dire Dawa, to come and take part in the historic celebration, which, apart from the usual fanfare one encounters in such occasions, has the following five important objectives:-

  • To create the opportunity that will enable us to show to the world what we can call the "Dire Culture": A unique culture that the residents of the city consisting of not only people from nearly all the nations and nationalities found in Ethiopia but also nationals of countries such as France, Italy, Greece, Armenia, Yemen, India, etc have gradually evolved from the peaceful coexistence of such diverse religious, Languages, Cultures, and ethnic make up living within the confines of a city they have all cared for from its very infancy. This had given rise to a new culture of tolerance, harmony, friendship, and mutual respect that transcends religious, language, and ethnic barriers.
  • To solicit financial support for the construction of a referral hospital that is hoped to reduce the agony and suffering of those members of the society who on account of the complexity of their particular ailment for which the medical care required is not available in dire Dawa itself, and so the patient has to travel to Addis Ababa to get treated. as the referral hospital in Addis Ababa handles all the referral cases sent by all the hospitals in the country, it is not surprising that they are always over-booked and that they have a long waiting list which the patients have to endure if they do not have the financial means to go to one of the expensive private medical institutions. What is most heartrending is what happens to those referral cases that are too poor to pay for their medication or travelling. The presence of such a referral hospital in Dire Dawa will undoubtedly ease the strain on the referral hospitals found in Addis Ababa not only by dealing with the referral cases from Dire Dawa itself but also by providing its service to patients from the neighboring regional states. Thus, it will reduce the waiting list by so much.
  • To attract more investors to the administration by showing its favorable investment climate and by demonstrating the resource bases it possesses, and the investment opportunities it offers.
  • To establish new partnership with new donor organizations, and/or strengthen existing relationships by clarifying its vision, and the strategies it has identified for the vision it envisages.
  • To set up a mechanism whereby native born Dire Dawans like you, at present living abroad, or elsewhere in Ethiopia, and friends of Dire Dawa could play an active role in the development of the administration.

Your presence on the occasion can have a profound impact to the success of these and other relevant outcomes like establishing mechanisms for the transfer of knowledge and skill through book donations, and the likes, which you sons and daughters of Dire Dawa living abroad could do with out much difficulty. Your work in this regard could make a difference to lives of thousands and thousands of your brother and sister Dire Dawans, who will not hesitate to do likewise when their turn comes to keep this torch of benevolence and love burning and passing it to the next generation.
